History and Purpose Of Adobe Flash
Brief History
Flash was originally started off as a drawing software Called SmartSketch, it then reworked and rebranded itself to be a vector animating platform. The program was purchased by Macromedia and contracted the name: “Flash”.
The program had a few successful years, until 2005, when the company: Macromedia was purchased and transpired into Adobe. The new Adobe Flash took itself around the web and was discovered by multiple designers as a versatile package with multiple dynamic features.
As the success for Flash grew, so did its mechanics. Flash was updated with the ability to play videos directly and was able to work with mobile devices at a moderate speed.
Still today, Flash has grown incredibly in terms of mechanics and reputation, with the software’s revenue having grown from $4 billion since 1999.
Scenario:
An independent Games company whose primary focus is online interactive media have contracted you; a freelance web based Game developer. The company has requested a simple flash game with a view to starting a large online Games Database. Your game will be one of many involved in the launch of this site. Investors will be involved in scouting the website for new talent, if you game stands out from the rest as something imaginative/creative/original, you may be offered a fulltime job. However before you begin the company would like you to write an article associated with using Flash as a development tool for games.
The purpose of Flash for the web:
Flash is used tremendously within web design, the software provides a great opportunity to create banners, Gifs and general assets for a website, and this is easy to do using the easy to use tools of the adobe platform. From that, the web designer could export as a numerous of file types and even import into Dreamweaver for the website.
With that being said, Flash is now a phenomenon on the web for its video player, hardly any site allows a video to be played unless you have downloaded Flash Player. The player is capably of multiple quality’s and has full subtitle support for any site.
Uses of Flash within mobile:
Flash Player on mobile devices allows you to reach users wherever they or you are.
The software has fully video functioning at high settings.
The ground-breaking technology allows for user to take full advantage of the web.
Content can be created by using the software own coding language, whether it is apps, games or videos.
The software is optimised for mobile; therefore it is just as fluid as on a PC.
The purpose of Flash for Games:
With the Adobe Flash software, games can be created via tweens and coding using action script, this allows small indie team to create prototypes or fully fledged games with just the Flash package, potentially mobile games can be created on this software just as well as any other.
Flash offers HTML exports, allowing a game in development to be published to the web for testing which would be great help to any small dev teams.
When exporting a Flash game as a swf file, it is wrapped in a nice package that is safe for distribution and security.
Assessing Flash as a Games Dev against other alternative softwares:
For me Flash is a easy to use software that has unlimited capabilities and is a prime member of the Adobe collection, that being said, the Adobe package is a expensive bundle.
Game Maker is a free to use software, in which you can create sprites and rooms to program and form into a game. It's easy to use and when paid for in full, a lot cheaper than the Adobe collection.
What Game Maker lacks is the capability of what Flash has, Flash does not limit itself to creating a specific media, whereas Game Maker is just for creating games.
With Flash one can ease into animation, whereas Game Maker requires a sprite for each step, being much more complex than the Adobe masterpiece.
Why I would use Flash instead of Game Maker:
For me Flash is a great graphic and If I was creating a game, I'd choose Flash because it does not limit itself to 64 by 64 pixel spirites, Flash is a vector based software, therefore no graphics will be pixelated or blurred.
With Flash I can also ease into coding, Game Maker restrains itself with limited and complex coding, whereas Flash has Action Script.
